Year One Proves Successful for College Football Playoff Philanthropic Endeavor

IRVING, Texas – In April of 2014, the College Football Playoff Foundation (CFPF) announced its primary cause of education with the launch of Extra Yard for Teachers (EYFT).  The initiative was to honor, celebrate, inspire and empower great teachers.  In celebration of Teacher Appreciation Week, May 4-8, the College Football Playoff reflects on a successful year.

Comprised of four main program components: (1) Direct Provision of Resources, (2) Teacher Recognition, (3) Professional Development and Leadership Training and (4) Inspiring a College-Going Culture, EYFT accomplished the following in 2014-15:

Direct Provision of Resources

CFPF provided and directed more than $500,000 to support public school teachers with classroom projects through the partnership with DonorsChoose.org.

  • In 2014-15, this included the funding of classroom projects posted in Pasadena, New Orleans and North Texas – the areas that were a part of the inaugural College Football Playoff in 2015.
  • On January 10, the CFPF and ESPN fully funded all Dallas Independent School District (DISD) and Arlington Independent School District (AISD) projects on DonorsChoose.org, the largest flash funding of classroom projects ever in the state of Texas.
    • CFP distributed $25 donor gift cards to all attendees of the College Football Playoff National Championship, funding over $200,000 in classroom projects.
    • Total impact numbers for all projects was:
    • 1,778 projects funded.
    • 1,401 schools reached.
    • 184,513 students positively affected.
    • At least one project funded in all 50 states.

Teacher Recognition

  • Five teachers from North Texas selected as regional Teachers of the Year were honored on the video board during the College Football Playoff National Championship.
  • Each teacher received two complimentary ticket to the CFP championship game, as well as photos with the two head coaches.

Professional Development and Leadership Training

  • The 2015 Extra Yard for Teachers Summit brought together over 600 teachers from across North Texas for an engaging and energetic half-day event featuring inspiring speakers and passionate performances.
  • Extra Yard for Teachers` implemented the Teaching Trust Ed Fellows Program, serving 70 teachers across the DFW region by developing teaching leaders.

Inspiring a College-Going Culture

  • Extra Yard for Teachers implemented programs, such as the college banner program and the college visit program, both which aimed to inspire grade-school students to attend and graduate from a college or university.
  • Here is a snapshot of the college banner program by the numbers:
  • 525 schools (87% low income) throughout the area awarded collegiate banners in 2014-15.
  • 22,000 college banners distributed, positively affecting 327,000 students a 20,700 classrooms.

2014-15 Extra Yard for Teachers – Marketing Highlights

  • EYFT holograms and hangtags were featured on over 3 million units of CFP products.
  • CFP contributed more than $1.8 million to the EYFT program.
  • The Richards Group advertising agency estimated media value for all EYFT branding efforts over $4 million with more than 150 million impressions.
  • College Colors Day, which takes place each fall, is a day dedicated to college sports fans wearing their school’s colors to show school spirit. In 2014, signage featuring the EYFT logo was displayed in 12,000 doors and windows
    of 500 different national, regional and local retailers. EYFT activation within the College Colors Day mobile app received over 55,000 impressions.
