Player of the Game
In the contest, Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow became the first quarterback in FBS history to throw 60 touchdown passes in a single season, as LSU snapped defending national champion Clemson’s 29-game winning streak.
Burrow, who was voted Offensive Player of the Game, completed 31-of-49 passes for 463 yards, establishing a new CFP National Championship record. His five passing touchdowns and six total TDs (one rushing) also broke the previous highs in the CFP title game.
Sophomore WR Ja’Marr Chase caught nine passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns for LSU, while junior WR Justin Jefferson added 106 yards on nine catches. Junior TE Thaddeus Moss also scored twice with five receptions for 36 yards.
Patrick Queen was named Defensive Player of the Game after leading LSU with eight tackles, including 2.5 behind the line of scrimmage. Fellow junior LB Jacob Phillips added eight stops, while junior S JaCoby Stevens had seven tackles and senior CB Kristian Fulton pitched in six.
LSU completed the 2019-20 campaign with a perfect 15-0 record, joining the 2018-19 Clemson Tigers as the second team in the modern era to accomplish the feat.
